If you spend a lot of time in France you will know that the country is divided up into Departments, themselves parts of Regions. Each Department has a number (2 digits unless an overseas Region) which forms part of its post code and until recently was part of the registration number plates of cars. Car number plates must still have a Department code shown, a 2 digit number over to the right hand side, together with a symbol for the related Region, though this no longer needs to be where the car is registered.

If you are of a mind, and I admit very few people will be, you can learn the Department numbering off by heart. It is good for your brain to learn a few things off by heart, and use of the Department numbers will be something to look out for when visiting France or when you spot a French car on the road.

Note that the identification of Regions within France was changed from the beginning of 2016. As most French people still identify more strongly with the pre-2016 Regions we give both the new Region identification and the older one.
